Okay, after much struggling and swearing over the outline for this damned story, I've finally realized what my problem is. I need to stop trying to follow the outline. >.< It's deviated too far, and it's not just going to be nicely wrapped up in a few more chapters anymore. Not if I want the relationship between Lavi and Kanda to be anything other than ridiculously forced, anyway.

So, I'm throwing it out the window and writing completely by the seat of my pants for the first time in almost two years. I used to be a strictly organic writer, but after I discovered the Snowflake Method I've always at least had a vague structure and known what my three disasters were going to be. >.< So... we'll see how this goes.

School is getting crazy, of course, which means I'll have less time to write, but at the very least I hope to have this story finished before the end of the year. Hopefully sooner, but that's my concrete goal.

Have patience with me. I have no idea where I'm going, but I'll get there eventually. *sweatdrops*

I saw this one in chichirinoda's journal, and thought it was actually worth doing. I've learned a few interesting things. One is tangential... I don't write nearly enough these days. I had to go halfway into 2006 to get twenty stories. T_T Another is that I can pretty much pinpoint the date of the writer's conference I went to, where I started really taking seriously the idea that first lines are important. Third is that I then resorted to almost always using dialogue to try to 'come in at an interesting moment'. Argh.

In the case of my fanfiction, though, it's not actually the first line that people see first, at least not if they're reading it in my journal. My cut tag is always an interesting or funny line from the chapter, so I've included that line for comparison. Clearly I was always aware that I needed better lines to draw people in, I just didn't always bother to apply it to the FIRST line.

So, my college university apparently has a sister school in Japan. Every year they do a cultural exchange thing, where a couple of students from here get to go there for four months. Everything is paid for... airline tickets, food, tuition, expenses, and you're housed by a host family. They tailor a course of studies specifically to you. All you have to do in return is help the profs with conversational English classes.

They want people who are willing and eager to learn Japanese, interested in the culture, can show they would be improved by the trip, etc, etc.

Sounds great, right? Sounds like it would be tailor-made for me, right? When the teacher read out the little announcement, everyone in my class looked straight at me. It would even be perfect timing, since it would be next fall and would give me something to keep myself occupied if chichirinoda decides to stay at UofM after all.

Just one little catch. You have to be born between 1991 and 1984 to go. I was born in 1979.

Fuckers.

AAARGH. This story is driving me crazy. I've never had to make so many major revisions to a plot before, but it just will not cooperate. I only hope it turns out okay in the end, and doesn't seem forced. >.< It has now changed so incredibly much from its first outline that I'm honestly not even sure how it's going to end, because it certainly can't end the way it was originally supposed to. *grumbles about stubborn muses*

Argh, sorry for taking so long with this chapter, guys. I was really stuck on it, and in the end I had to go back and watch the relevant episodes again, only to discover that I'd completely mucked up part of what I thought was the timeline and had to rewrite everything AGAIN.

Anyway, this is where things start diverging from the timeline as they happened in the anime as Lavi starts having fun with his new powers. *grins evilly*

Wow, my first attempt to write this chapter ended up turning this into a Lavi/Lenalee instead of Kanda/Lavi. I sort of poked at it a bit, sent it to my beta in despair, and she agreed.

So I rewrote most of it. >.< Don't ask what the muse was on, I have no idea. For a minute there I honestly thought I was going to have to take down the first two chapters and redo the whole thing as a het story. *sweatdrops*

After three and a half weeks of working 10-12 hours/day, 7 days a week, I finally had a week off. So what did I do? Stared at blank documents and failed to come up with any inspiration for a story of any kind. Played lots of Suikoden. FINALLY started to work on an update for my website, now two years out of date. Read my old stories over and over, hoping to spark ideas.

So of course, the day before I go back to work for another three or four weeks, I get blindsided by a great idea. *sighs* C'est la vie. Or C'est Lavi, in this case.

Hahaha finally no manga spoiler warnings, because the anime has now caught up to exactly the last thing I read in the manga. Now I'm as clueless as everyone else.

I've been so insanely busy for the last... well, year, really, that I've hardly written a damn thing. And the less I write, the less I want to write, because it's really hard to get back into it. But I've finally had a couple of days off, and I've used the time to force myself to start writing again. Hopefully I will continue to be at least a little more productive.

The idea for this came to me while catching up on the latest episodes, pretty much springing full-formed into my head, so I figured it would be an easy one to start with.

Okay, so about two days after school ended, my computer imploded. Rather violently. I've had to completely replace the hard drive, and they couldn't retrieve anything off the old one.

Now, all my writing is safely backed up, as it should be. But I just didn't have space to back up my massive mp3 collection, and most of it is almost impossible to replace through normal channels. It represents ten years of collecting j-rock and anime songs, and I don't even know where to look for some of it now. Some I've been able to recover from Cnd's files, but she and I don't always have the same taste.

Most of it I can live without, but some of it I really want to replace. If anybody on my flist has the following, PLEASE let me know.
