We just finished the first of our two week master classes at school; this one was millinery. I didn't expect to be terribly interested in it, hats have never really been my thing. But omg it was so much FUN! Partly because our teacher was awesome, but partly because it really is interesting. We made three complete hats in two weeks; one buckram/plastic fabric covered hat, one fosshape helmet, and one felt bonnet.

When I went to check some details on the Wiki article, I discovered it had been completely revamped and a lot of the information I count on - such as specifics about each person's known attacks - has either been removed or put somewhere I can't find it. -_-

Also, does anyone know the official spelling of the name of Lavi's Innocence? When I wrote the chapter when I first mentioned it, Wiki said it was Tettsui. Now it says it's Tessei. Either could be correct, from the little I know about the kanji involved.

My New Year's resolution is to write 1000 words a day.

Every day. Regardless of how many I might be 'ahead' by. I'll hopefully be well over that amount in general; 365,000 words in a year isn't that many by my standards. But for the past two years I doubt I've had even 200K in the year. My lifestyle changed abruptly and very significantly when I switched career tracks, and my old style of writing just isn't working anymore.

Normally when I write, I sit down and write a whole chapter at once. I HATE being interrupted and trying to pick up a scene in the middle later on. So I write in chunks, and once upon a time, I seemed to have no trouble finding lots of chunks. So even though I didn't write more than two or three times a week, I was still very productive.

Now, though, I just don't have that much time all at once. I'm falling behind, I'm not keeping up even with my fanfiction committments, let alone working on original stuff. I didn't write a single word for NaNo this year, and that upsets me.

So, we'll try it this way. If I can force myself to write 1000 a day no matter what, maybe I'll finally learn to write in small bits instead of large chunks. Either way, if I don't do SOMETHING drastic my writing quality is going to continue to slide.

Normally I don't bother posting about resolutions, but maybe having people to hold me accountable to it will make me actually DO it.

It's time to swim or get out of the pool. If I'm serious about writing, I should be able to do this. If I can't commit to this... then I'm not serious about writing.

(Obviously Foresight was not finished by the end of the year as I'd hoped. But maybe this way I'll actually make some bloody progress on it. ;p)

Well, I finally figured out why there were so MANY typos and problems with the last two chapters I posted. I have two copies of this fic on my computer... the one I collated directly from our RP sessions, and the one that we each took a turn editing. Guess which one I've been C&Ping from. *facepalms*

I fixed chapters 2 & 3 - there are no major changes, just fewer typos and fewer places where we repeat things the other one just said, or phrased things awkwardly, etc.

As of this chapter we are now getting into the series timeline, and we will be describing events that happen in the anime (and presumably the manga, but I haven't read it so I don't know how much the anime deviates from it). Just as importantly, we will also be skipping major events and referring to things that happened in the series, working on the assumption that everyone reading this will understand what we're talking about. So if you don't want to be spoiled or confused, you'd better watch the series first.

Okay, after much struggling and swearing over the outline for this damned story, I've finally realized what my problem is. I need to stop trying to follow the outline. >.< It's deviated too far, and it's not just going to be nicely wrapped up in a few more chapters anymore. I saw this one in chichirinoda's journal, and thought it was actually worth doing. I've learned a few interesting things. One is tangential... I don't write nearly enough these days. I had to go halfway into 2006 to get twenty stories. T_T Another is that I can pretty much pinpoint the date of the writer's conference I went to, where I started really taking seriously the idea that first lines are important. Third is that I then resorted to almost always using dialogue to try to 'come in at an interesting moment'. Argh.

In the case of my fanfiction, though, it's not actually the first line that people see first, at least not if they're reading it in my journal. My cut tag is always an interesting or funny line from the chapter, so I've included that line for comparison. Clearly I was always aware that I needed better lines to draw people in, I just didn't always bother to apply it to the FIRST line.

So, my college university apparently has a sister school in Japan. Every year they do a cultural exchange thing, where a couple of students from here get to go there for four months. Everything is paid for... airline tickets, food, tuition, expenses, and you're housed by a host family. They tailor a course of studies specifically to you. All you have to do in return is help the profs with conversational English classes.

They want people who are willing and eager to learn Japanese, interested in the culture, can show they would be improved by the trip, etc, etc.

Sounds great, right? Sounds like it would be tailor-made for me, right? When the teacher read out the little announcement, everyone in my class looked straight at me. It would even be perfect timing, since it would be next fall and would give me something to keep myself occupied if chichirinoda decides to stay at UofM after all.

Just one little catch. You have to be born between 1991 and 1984 to go. I was born in 1979.

Fuckers.

AAARGH. This story is driving me crazy. I've never had to make so many major revisions to a plot before, but it just will not cooperate.
